How to Make the Most of Your Dance Labs Course

Set goals.

Any self-guided program requires discipline, so it’s important to set goals to keep yourself on course. Whether it’s practicing an exercise for a certain amount of time each day, or challenging yourself to master a combination by a set date, having something to aim for will keep you motivated. Make sure that your goals are challenging but achievable, and be sure to write them down and review them often.

Practice in a safe environment with adequate space.

First and foremost, make sure you have enough room to get moving. It’s hard to focus on technique when you’re worried about kicking your furniture or younger siblings! While a dance floor is ideal, your living room carpet should suffice for most courses.  Also, having a full-length mirror nearby will allow you to fine-tune your body placement.

Be sure your muscles are warm.

A lot of these courses dive right into learning and practicing skills. So, prior to starting your practice, take the time to warm up and stretch to avoid injury. Being warm and limber is key to properly learning and mastering these skills.

Practice the exercises when cued.

The exercises in our courses are designed to build on each other, so make sure that you’re practicing the exercises and combos when cued.  This repetition and step-by-step mastery of each skill is the heart of your training, so don’t skip ahead!

Move on to the next exercise once you feel comfortable.

We provide guidance in each course on how many times to practice each exercise. This number is a recommendation--please practice as many times as is necessary to execute the move with good form. You should feel comfortable with the exercise before moving on to the next.

Take your time.

Remember--you purchased this course, it’s yours!  There is no rush to complete it by a certain deadline, so be patient with yourself. Take the time to thoroughly understand proper placement, muscle engagement, exercises, and combinations.

Practice. Practice. Practice.

Becoming a dancer is a process that requires a LOT of practice. So, don’t be afraid to do just that.  Practice, practice, practice!  Running through these exercises and combinations over and over will help you master the skills.

We love to see your progress! Show us how you’ve mastered these skills (and also for a chance to be featured) by tagging @dance.labs on Instagram. Good luck!
